Blue Origin will begin selling space tickets next year

Private American space company Blue Origin "will soon begin passenger suborbital space launches using the New Shepard missile, and from next year is going to begin selling tickets for commercial flights," Space.com "reports with reference to the company's representatives.

Speaking at the Amazon Web Services Public Sector Summit, Vice-president of Blue Origin, Rob Meyerson shared some new information on the current status of the development of the company's suborbital spacecraft, and also told when Blue Origin will begin selling tickets for commercial seats.

"Very soon we plan to launch the first test passenger launches. Ticket sales for commercial flights will begin in 2019, "Meyerson said, but, unfortunately, did not specify the cost of the ticket for a suborbital flight.

All previous launches of the New Shepard rocket were unmanned, but the company has already noted that the latest tests will be conducted with the participation of testers. Moreover, the company reluctantly shares the details of its progress, giving only vague comments on such questions.

"We continue to work actively to ensure that everything is structurally stable and ready to fly," said Bob Smith, CEO of Blue Origin in April this year in an interview with various media outlets.

"As soon as we are confident that everything is ready, we will immediately begin a dialogue on prices, as well as how the whole process of preparation and launch will look."

Even the owner of the company, multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos, does not tell us any details.

"We do not know the ticket price policy yet. We have not decided yet, "Bezos said in an interview in May this year.

This approach, of course, is knocked out against the background of other competitors who also plan to carry out commercial suborbital flights in the near future. For example, the same Virgin Galactic began selling tickets for passenger launches more than 10 years ago, when the first spaceplane company SpaceShipTwo was still in the early stages of development. In total, to date, Virgin Galactic has approximately 700 customers, who at least made an advance payment.

Blue Origin launched its New Shepard missile eight times, including the very first in April 2015, which can be called partially successful. Then the rocket ascended to a given height and disconnected the prototype of the spacecraft, which successfully landed back on parachutes. The launch vehicle itself (remember, New Shepard was designed as a reusable rocket) could not make a soft landing because of problems with hydraulics. As a result, the module crashed. The last successful launch and landing took place on April 29 . When the next one is held, it is not known, however, Dean Kassman, the head of the technology department of Blue Origin later in a conversation with the media said that the next launch will happen "in the summer season".

Speaking at the last meeting with journalists, Rob Meyerson for a long time was president of Blue Origin, but this year he headed the development of a new technology area within the company and began to engage in concepts. For example, one such is the concept of the lunar lander Blue Moon .

"We believe that the construction of colonies on the Moon will be the next logical step in the conquest of Mars and the more distant space," Meyerson said at the meeting.

What exactly the company is going to do after the project Blue Moon - "remains to be seen." At the moment, Blue Origin is recruiting highly qualified specialists for the development of the company's road map for the near future, as well as for working and researching new technological projects that will fit the company's main vision.

"Our vision is millions of people who live and work in space. And we understand that there are many ways to realize this dream. The definition of one of these ways is what we are now doing, "summed up Meyerson.
