Detects pedestrians and cyclists to avoid accidents
Wolfsburg has been the city chosen to implement a pilot test carried out by the Volkswagen car and the Siemens technology to reduce the number of traffic accidents.
The system puts the focus on the traffic lights that will inform the driver in advance if it can continue circulating without having to stop. A device that uses WLANp technology and has been installed on a street section in which ten consecutive traffic lights will transmit their phases to vehicles connected with Car2x technology.
The goal is for the driver to know if the successive traffic lights are green and thus anticipate future decisions. With this system you could avoid unnecessary braking or acceleration. In the future, these assistance functions would be carried out without the intervention of the driver thanks to technology.
The project's promoters hope that this technology will also contribute to road safety in general, so two intersections in Wolfsburg have also been equipped with modern sensor technology to detect pedestrians and cyclists.
«Crossings equipped with radar sensor technology can increase the accuracy when detecting pedestrians and cyclists. Thus, it provides information that vehicles can not detect, especially in complicated intersections and black spots of accidents, "explains the director of Siemens Mobility Germany, Manfred Fuhg.
To distribute the objective data of the sensors from the traffic infrastructure to the vehicle, the WLANp technology for Car2X, which Volkswagen will introduce next year, will be supplemented with additional messages.
