Madrid and Barcelona, approved in quality of life but suspended in R & D

A report reveals that the two capitals are in the top 20 in the generation, development and retention of talent across Europe

The quality of life in Spain is one of the greatest attractions of our country, both for Spaniards and for many foreigners. Now a report prepared by the consultancy Everis and Barcelona Global confirms it. City Talent Index , an index that assesses the capacity of cities to generate, attract, develop and retain talent throughout Europe, has positioned Madrid and Barcelona in the top 20 of the ranking from 64 indicators in five different areas.

With sources ranging from Eurostat, the World Bank, the OECD or the Fortune 500, the report reveals that Barcelona stands out in postgraduate education and Madrid in lifestyle and business networks. Copenhagen, Paris and London lead the table for business excellence, explains Sandra Sans, a partner at Everis.

The attraction of talent is not seen from a single perspective, says Sans, but a city has to combine R & D, good public policies, investment in education, quality of life, connectivity ... To attract talent you have to get a good note on the five indicators, says the person in charge. These five parameters measured by the Everis report and those referred to by Sans are education, lifestyle, business excellence; research, innovation and social impact; and economy and public policies.

Innovation, a pending task

Innovation is one of our pending tasks. The partner of Everis explains that Madrid and Barcelona are at the bottom of the ranking if we look at this parameter. The Nordic countries are the most advanced for their investment in R & D and for their patents and prizes. In his opinion, Spanish capitals could improve if they are committed to employment in this area through strong public and private investment.

In post-university education we are very well positioned, but the pre-university has very low levels, says Sans. In Spain talent is attracted for the good quality of life and public services, but we are generating very little talent of our own, we are going to have to import professionals. In his opinion, the important thing is to create jobs in the field of R & D, and if there are not enough, they will have to be imported.

In the overall calculation of the classification, Madrid reaches the 17th position. The indicator in which the Spanish capital stands out most is the quality of its business network, ranked third in Europe. The report positions Madrid as an ideal environment to establish a network of contacts based, among other indicators, on the productivity and activity of companies present in the city, as well as on the number of events that the capital hosts throughout the year . In addition, the Spanish city stands out in the education sector for its postgraduate offer, which ranks fourth in the global index, and the twelfth position in reference to lifestyle (thanks, in part, to its public services, which occupy the 8th place in Europe).

Madrid on the 17th and Barcelona on the 19th

If there is a relevant locality in relation to its educational offer, it is Barcelona, which places the index in the top 3 in Europe both at the level of professional development and postgraduate education. The Ciudad Condal stands out, among other reasons, for its offer of specialized training, the position of its business schools in the European rankings and the possibilities available for Executive profiles. In the global calculation, Barcelona occupies the 19th position.

Both Madrid and Barcelona share several indicators where to put the focus to rise positions in the classification. Pre-university education is one of the areas where both cities should focus their future efforts, along with support for the entrepreneurial network. Likewise, the two cities have among their main challenges to optimize the labor market and generate greater government and regulatory stability.

Copenhagen ranks first in the overall index, thanks mainly to its research and innovation capacity. London, which follows the Danish capital, leads the category of Education, thanks to its university offer, postgraduate and the possibilities it offers with respect to professional development. Paris, the third city in the ranking, heads the category Excellence in business, due, above all, to its professional network. For its part Dublin (13th position) leads the category of Economy and Public Policy, and Oslo (8th) the Lifestyle.
